21 Principles–Principle 11

A couple of months ago, I started a personal challenge to share one of the 21 principles as covered in the book by Richard G. Scott.  This book has really touched my heart and I have felt impressed to share it with you and my own feelings about each of the principles. You can read about the other principles I have covered here.   If you would like your own copy of this book, you can purchase it here.   This is NOT an affiliate link, even though I do have an affiliate account with Amazon.  I have chosen NOT to use an affiliate link as I don’t feel right about it in this circumstance.

“As you seek spiritual knowledge, search for principles,” counsels Elder Richard G. Scott. “Principles are concentrated truth, packaged for application to a wide variety of circumstances.”

“A true principle makes decisions clear even under the most confusing and challenging circumstances.”

This is a hard but necessary principle.  Sometimes it is hard to recognize that our struggles are for our own good and our personal growth.  The Lord allows things to challenge us so we become stronger.  And it makes perfect sense that the Lord has an individual plan for each of us.  We are his children.  And just like our own children, there are not any of us alike.  How boring would it be if everything was exactly the same for everyone?  There would be no challenge to that.  We would not grow from our experiences.  We wouldn’t learn.  And because God loves us, he wants us to grow.  Pretty neat if you stop to think about it.  It doesn’t make our challenges any easier.  But perhaps if we remember that God is in charge, it will make them more bearable as we learn to lean on Him.

Boy is this one a mouthful!  It is so true though.  And in order for the principles of faith, prayer, love and humility to become a part of someone, they have to be used.  Those muscles have to be exercised.  We strengthen them by doing.  The more we do, the closer to our Savior we become and the more we will be influenced by the Holy Spirit.  We can become the hands that God uses to bless someone else and to do His work.  Pretty powerful stuff.

I think it is important to be open to what other people might say to us.  Often, I have found bits of wisdom through experiences and stories they have shared with me and they didn’t know why they were sharing it.  These are the times the Lord is prompting them to share something with me that I most likely need to hear.  It might be because I am privately going through something and need to hear the experience or story.  It also might be that I need to hear it in order to help someone else.  Later when I am in a certain situation, I can draw upon that story or experience and share it with the person who needs it.  In those cases, I  always start with saying “a friend of mine shared…”  By disclosing that, I am able to keep the integrity of the story or experience and still maintain the privacy of the other individual.

I think that those times the Lord chooses to teach us through other people is a very powerful tool that can change our lives if we take the time to listen.  If we try our best to be close to Him and the Spirit, we will recognize those teaching moments that He may bring to us.  And those can change our lives and perspective for the better.

Prayer is a very powerful gift we have been given by a loving Heavenly Father.  It is our direct line to Him.  Our prayers can be brief and to the point, or they can be as long as we need them to be to express what is in our heart.  It doesn’t matter to our Heavenly Father.  He is always willing to listen to us and then to guide and direct us through the Holy Ghost.   We have to be willing to listen to Him though.  Those gentle whisperings do not always speak to us while we are praying.  Instead, we need to be open to them and carefully tuned in to the voice of the Spirit.  Sometimes He will tell us No or Not Now.  Other times, what we are told may be unexpected.  He knows what is best for us and what we need when we need it.  We have to put our trust into Him and His love for us.  And sometimes our answers come through others.  They may say exactly what we need to hear.  If we are in tune with His Spirit, we will recognize His voice whispering through the voice of the person we are speaking with.  We have to KNOW  Him in order to recognize Him.  And the best way to do that is to develop a personal relationship with Him through the gift of personal prayer.

This principle gives me hope.  It simply means that no matter how hard Satan tries to lead me away from Christ, he can’t force me to do it.  He can try to make me believe that he can.  But he can’t.  My safety in this world of chaos and evil can be found in the Lord.  If I do the things I know that I should:  pray daily, read my scriptures daily, attend my church meetings, help others, etc., etc., then I can have the Spirit of the Lord with me to help guide and direct me in my choices.  That is how we can be safe and that is what we must do.
