Holiday Bliss 2010-December 10

December 10, 2010 by Brenda 16 Comments

I know that yesterday I said I would tell you about my nativities.  But after working so long all day and into the night on work problems, I am exhausted.  So today, I am simply going to share a favorite recipe.  It is a Christmas tradition around here to make popcorn balls.  We love to make red ones and green ones.  The funny thing is that Chandler hates popcorn.  We could skip this completely each year and make him happy.  But I love them and especially this recipe.  We have made them every year I have been married and that is a long time.  I think I will insist we make these today so I can indulge in the sugary goodness they bring.

Popcorn Balls

1 Cup Sugar

1/4 Cup Butter (the real stuff)

1/3 Cup water

1/4 Cup Karo Syrup

3/4 tsp. salt (optional)

1 tsp. Vanilla

Food Coloring (optional)

12-16 Cups Popcorn

Combine ingredients except for vanilla and food coloring.  Cook to hard ball stage.  Add the vanilla and coloring.  Stir and pour over popcorn.  Form into balls.  Enjoy.

What Holiday Bliss are you celebrating today?

Yummy!…My husband taught the kids how to string popcorn this year; it seems the youngest was the only one who to “take to it”!! 😉 Now, maybe we will make some popcorn balls! Not sure the youngest one will be able to eat any, though, with his two front teeth missing!! 😉

Oh, I remember eating those as a kid. I haven’t had them in years!

Thank you for this! I remember these too. If you ever had the store-bought ones, you’ll remember they’re stale and not very tasty. This is great — I think we’ll try them!

Brian’s sister makes them every year and Ashley and I love them. I’m not sure why because I HATE popcorn (unless it’s Kettle Korn)- I can’t stand how it sticks in your teeth.
Have you ever heard Tim Hawkins talk about popcorn balls?! LOL

Thanks for posting the linky. I figured it was something like that and that if no one told you you probably wouldn’t notice for a while. I know things have been such a struggle lately with the forum being down and all the extra work that put on you. I hope things will slow down now and you can get a little relaxation and enjoy the rest of December and the holidays.

Hmm, this could be fun. Thanks for the idea, we’ve never tried them, either, but the boys LOVE popcorn!

LOVE popcorn balls. Stinkin’ braces….I won’t be able to enjoy them this year Have you ever had Popcorn Cake? One of my husband’s favorite 🙂 Made on the same concept as the popcorn balls….we typically put in plain M&M’s, peanuts, and suppose to have gum drops but we aren’t gum drop fans. We’ve also used Reese’s pieces too. You can add whichever goodies you’d like actually LOL Then press into an angel food cake pan. Let set up for awhile then just push the bottom out onto a plate. Slice and eat. Yummy!!

My aunt used to make that every year. Only she did it with marshmallows, like rice krispie treats. Good stuff! 🙂

Oh….oops….forgot….use melted marshmallows and butter instead of the karo syrup. That’s the goo that holds it all together hehe
