Come Unto Christ Challenge–Day 57

March 17, 2018 by Brenda Leave a Comment

I have decided to share a 72 day daily challenge with you each day until Easter, April 1st. We are doing this in our Relief Society, and I thought I would like to share it here as well.  I shared a little about the challenge here.

Each day I will share the daily video here and then my personal thoughts about it after I have personally watched it. Today is Day 57.

The Last Supper

Meeting in an upper room with His disciples, Jesus washes their feet, institutes the sacrament, and commands them to love one another.

John 13:1-35

1  Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

2  And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

3  Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

4  He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

5  After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

6  Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

7  Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

8  Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

9  Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

10  Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

11  For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

12  So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

13  Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

14  If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15  For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

16  Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

17  If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

18  ¶I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

19  Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

20  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

21  When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22  Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

23  Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24  Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

25  He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

26  Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27  And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

28  Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

29  For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

30  He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

31  ¶Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32  If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

33  Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

34  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

My Impressions:

I think the thing that struck me most was that Jesus excused Judas before He administered the sacrament to His disciples.  He knew that Judas was not worthy to partake.  I think this was done out of love and was necessary so that Judas did not face the  certain condemnation of partaking of the sacrament unworthily.

Come Unto Christ Challenge–Day 56

Ye Have Done it Unto Me

Jesus teaches of charity and the love of fellow men.

Matthew 25:31-46

31  ¶When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32  And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43  I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44  Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45  Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

My Impressions:

I find it funny that I watched this today.  Earlier I watched a short video that had been shared on Facebook, about a man who had tried to feed a homeless man by buying him a meal at McDonald’s.  The manager at that store didn’t want the homeless man there eating, despite the fact that the food had been paid for by someone else and that person was eating inside too.  The man that had paid for the food was standing up for the homeless man because the manager had called the police to have the homeless man removed and charged with criminal trespass.  What ended up happening is that both men were ejected from the restaurant and made to leave without any of the food the one man had purchased.  At the end of the video, the man was telling the homeless man to get into his car and they would go somewhere else to get some food.  Even after all of that, the first man was still trying to help the homeless man get a meal.

As I watched that video, I kept saying aloud that it was just so wrong on the part of the restaurant manager.  They weren’t sitting by anyone else, the store wasn’t that busy, and honestly, they were both just trying to eat.  So now that I have watched this video of Christ, I see a clear example of sheep and goats.

Last fall, we had the opportunity to help a homeless man.  Our family helped him find shelter and we fed him.  We did this for a couple of months, even though it was supposed to be only a few days to about 2 weeks.  He did take advantage of us, and we did have to try to help him find other arrangements as our initial solution really couldn’t go for longer due to the winter and needing to winterize our camper.  I remember that my sister remarked to me at the time, “I hope your experience with him doesn’t keep you from helping others in the future.”  I just laughed at the time, but honestly, I have been a little more leery because of some of the things that transpired.  That being said, I do want to be one of His sheep and not a goat.  So I will continue to look for ways to help others who may need my help.

Come Unto Christ Challenge–Day 55

The Parable of the Talents

Jesus declares the parable of the talents.

Matthew 25:14-30

14  ¶For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.

15  And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

16  Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.

17  And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.

18  But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

19  After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.

20  And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

21  His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

22  He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.

23  His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

24  Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:

25  And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

26  His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:

27  Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

28  Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.

29  For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

30  And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

My Impressions:

This is another of my favorite parables.  Each of us has been given at least one talent.  We can increase our talents or we can decrease our talents by what we do with what we were given.  Some talents are not obvious ones.  When we think of talent, we often think of things like singing, acting, dancing, artistry, writing.  But those are just the showy types of talents. Honestly, I would love the talent of being able to draw and paint.  I want to someday figure that out and that will bring me joy.  I know a lady who wants the talent of singing, but she has to work very hard to even sing on key.  Her desire is there though and she works hard on developing it.

Some of the greatest talents are the ones we might not recognize as talents.  I have talked about this often with my son.  He has expressed before that he just isn’t very talented, except for writing.  But he has one of the greatest talents I know:  the ability to love everyone unconditionally.  That isn’t as easy for many of us and for him it is just who he is and what he does.

Some people have the talent of believing.  They have faith that comes easily for them, while others doubt.  Some have the talent of knowledge.  One of my greatest talents is one that others might not even recognize as a talent.  I have the ability to recognize the Spirit and then follow it.

We need to always be working on our talents and finding them.  If we ask the Lord in faith, He will show us what our talents are and how we can best use them.  Then we need to DO.

Come Unto Christ Challenge–Day 54

Each day I will share the daily video here and then my personal thoughts about it after I have personally watched it. Today is Day 54.

The Ten Virgins

Jesus declares the parable of the ten virgins.

Matthew 25:1-13

1  Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2  And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3  They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4  But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5  While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6  And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7  Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8  And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9  But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

10  And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

11  Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12  But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

13  Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

My Impressions:

I love this parable.  It is one of my very favorites.  We have to each prepare ourselves and fill our own spiritual lamps with the oil of the gospel and our good works.  We can’t share our oil.  This is something we must do ourselves.  I hope I am one of the five wise and not the foolish.  I am trying to be one of the five wise.  May I stay on the gospel path always is my prayer and my hope, so I will be prepared to meet the Savior when He calls.

Come Unto Christ Challenge–Day 53

Jesus Teaches about the Widow’s Mites

A poor widow contributes her all into the temple treasury. Jesus teaches that her contribution is greater than that of the rich who gave of their abundance.

Mark 12:41-44

41  ¶And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

42  And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

43  And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

44  For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

My Impressions:

When we give our all…everything we have…it is of greater worth to the Lord than just giving a lot.  It shows where our hearts truly are and though our intentions may be good, if we are not giving our whole heart to the Lord, it isn’t truly being given to Him unconditionally.
