I choose to give this product 5 out of 5 Gold Teacher’s Stars!!
If I could give Write Shop StoryBuilders more than 5 gold stars I would, because what can I say…I LOVE any product that promotes creativity! For such a relatively simple product, it has encouraged more creativity and fun than just about anything I have reviewed thus far.
We were given two StoryBuilders to review: World of People and Christmas Mini-Builder. I love this product so much that the other two StoryBuilders that are currently available and any future Storybuilders will be finding their way into my homeschool very soon.
The StoryBuilders are sets of card decks that allow your student to deal out a starting point for a creative writing project. The cards have different categories that help to provide the many different elements of their story-character, character trait, setting and plot. This allows your children to have freedom in their writing while practicing good writing habits.
I found many creative ways to use these cards in our home and I am sure that we will come up with even more ways as time passes. Your imagination is truly the only limit when using these cards. The first time we tried them, my son drew one card from each deck and created a short story. When he completed that task, he asked if we could use the cards every day in our homeschool. What is a mom to say in this instance, but yes?! It was shortly after this, that we went as a family and saw the movie “Bedtime Stories” and we decided to try the cards together as a family and create a story together. We had a lot of fun and decided that this would be a great game to try out on a car trip that we were going to be taking this week. It has been a great way to pass the miles and be silly in a controlled and creative way.
One of my son’s favorite ways to use the cards was to create a comic strip with the story elements that he drew from the card decks. He loves to draw his own comics and this presented a new and fun challenge for him. It has been fun to see his creations and we are never quite sure what he is going to come up with when he is using the cards.
I think these cards could be used for any age, regardless of ability to read and write. It would be simple to verbally create a story with a preschool age child and stoke their imagination. Another great adaptation would be to have your young child draw pictures for their story and then tell you the story with the pictures they have created.
The WriteShop StoryBuilders are available in e-book format and are an instant download. It is suggested that you print the cards in 4 different colors. I suggest using cardstock paper and then laminating them for durability. I did this and we are loving it. The StoryBuilders are just $7.95 each with the exception of the Christmas Mini-Builder which is selling for just $3.95. These cards will be a welcome addition to any writing program, but I do have to warn you that using them will cause the creative juices to flow and your imagination to soar.
