I choose to give this product 4 out of 5 Gold Teacher’s Stars!!
When I first discovered that we were going to be reviewing SpellQuizer by Dan Hite, I will admit that I wasn’t too sure how I felt about it. You see, my son is a fantastic, natural speller. I really couldn’t see how a spelling software program would benefit us in our homeschool. It was with a grain of salt that I downloaded the program and began to explore it. Now that we have been using it, I have to say that I cannot imagine NOT using it in our homeschool!
I strongly believe in having an individualized spelling list for each child. While some children may have difficulty spelling certain words or may struggle to meet their “grade level” in spelling, there are other children who need more advanced words to spell, lest they become bored with the subject. In essence, a child should be able to be challenged at their own individual level rather than what the education world deems age appropriate. This program meets this requirement beautifully!
Although we technically do not need to administer a spelling program in our homeschool any longer, my son loves to spell so much that he has requested that we continue with one. He likes to be challenged and enjoys spelling new words. I suppose you could say that he is a lover of words, just like his mom.
The SpellQuizzer program, allows parents to enter and save custom spelling word lists for their students. Once these lists are entered, the students can then use the program independently to practice their spelling.
While this may sound like a standard spelling program for practice, the one thing that makes the SpellQuizzer program different is the fact that the words are entered by use of a microphone. (I recommend using a microphone, which can be purchased for around $10.) This allows the parent to record the spelling word and sentence in their own voice. If the user does not have a microphone or speakers for their computer, the parent can enter in a reminder phrase to give a prompt for the word the student is supposed to spell. The reminder phrase can also be used in conjunction with the vocal recording, enabling the child to use a multi-sensory approach as they can both see and hear the spelling prompt. I quickly discovered that there is so much more to the SpellQuizzer program than I initially thought. The uses for it are wide and varied and can carry into each and every subject that you choose to study in your homeschool. We quickly discovered that we could use a vocal and written reminder phrase in conjunction with vocabulary lessons. Since spelling is part of my son’s grade in this area, it works very well and is a fun way for him to practice his vocabulary words. We also found the program to be quite helpful in studying History and Science. We use it the same way we would for a vocabulary list.
My son absolutely adores this program and is constantly trying to figure out ways to make it work in every subject. In fact, he often asks if he can play with the program during his down time. What is a mom to say but “YES!”
SpellQuizzer can be purchased for the one-time price of $29.95. The price includes all future updates and is backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee. However, if you would like to try the product before you buy it, the SpellQuizzer site offers a 30 Day FULL Trial. You will even find some sample spelling lists that you can import easily into the program for you to try.
We have enjoyed our time testing out the SpellQuizzer program. I am happy to say that we will continue to use it in all of the applications we can think of in the future. It is truly a great program and with it, your children will be able to spell S-U-C-C-E-S-S!
