First of all, how on earth did we get here to 12th grade??!! When we started this homeschooling journey several years ago, back in 5th grade, the end of our homeschooling years seemed years and years away. We would be homeschooling for the rest of our lives it seemed. And sadly, I find myself very melancholy as we approach our final year of homeschooling. It’s just plain weird to think that this is my final year to plan and prepare. I’ve put it off as long as I could as I didn’t want to enter this final leg of our journey.
It is with joy and sadness that I share our choices for our final year of homeschooling.
World History 2
We had a great time with history last year. Chandler wants to finish out the Mystery of History books, so we are planning on doing Mystery of History 3 and the very new Mystery of History 4. We will also be doing the activities from the supplemental packs and also incorporating the the 3 volumes of The World After Christ: An LDS Perspective alongside the MOH books. We love history, so this so isn’t a big deal to do all of this. His 9th grade year, he burned through over 2 complete years of American History and I had to find something new for his 10th grade year. It was nuts. He still finished early that year and I refused to implement more with 3 weeks left of our school year. So it sounds like a lot, but for Chandler, it really isn’t.
I wanted to implement some more geography this year, and I found a really fun way to do it. We are going to be using Mapping the World With Art, by Ellen Johnston McHenry. This book teaches a little about the history that ties in with the map, teaches how to draw the maps, (we are using the supplemental dvd for this part as well as the instructions in the book), and has some fun activities that you can do to make things just plain fun. We are looking forward to using this and at the end of the year, Chandler will draw a map of the world for a final project.
Earth & Space Science
I have wanted Chandler to do a course like this from day 1 of our homeschooling journey. He finally relented this year and the more I plan, the more excited I am getting for this class. He is beginning to be intrigued as different packages arrive filled with items for the labs I have planned. I decided to try using the ck12 website this year to actually design this course the way I wanted it. We are using a Flex book and I have added exactly the information I want him to learn into our textbook. I have also rewritten the information that I felt needed to be tweaked a bit. This is a very customized textbook and I have told him that no one else in the world has this exact book. Totally true. It’s taken me hours and hours over many many days, but I am pleased with the end result. We are also going to be utilizing the cd-rom curriculum from Homeschool Astronomy when we get to our study of space. It should be a lot of fun.
For the first time in several years, we are stepping away from Thinkwell. We originally had planned to do the Trigonometry course this year. But then I felt convicted that we shouldn’t do it and that Chandler needs a break and needs something entirely different. So we are going to do Consumer Math this year and we have chosen to use the course by LifePACs. This should be a practical course and very low-key for us this year. We are looking forward to it.
Film and Literature
My original plan was to write this course. But as I was running out of time, my hubby suggested that I see if there was anything already planned out that would suit us. I did a little investigating, and we decided to try Movies As Literature for this class. We think it will be a fun way to study literature this year and help us look at movies a bit differently.
We decided to expand our adventures with The One Year Adventure Novel and use the extended pack for Science Fiction and Fantasy. Chandler is wanting to move in this direction with his books, so it just made sense to us to add this into our school year. He has a great idea already, so I am anxious for him to implement it and start writing his new series. His current series is still in editing and they will be published soon. I just need to get it done.
This should go very well with the Consumer Math class we are going to do this year. I have wanted to have Chandler take this class by Dave Ramsey for awhile and I can’t think of a better way to prepare him for being an adult than learning about personal finance. This is an important class for Chandler’s future.
We are going to use Mango one last time to finish this course in German. Chandler has loved this course from Mango and he has developed a great love for the German language through it.
We are going to use a combination of Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and the Total Gym this year. Chandler will continue to walk to Seminary each day, so he will also have that 2 miles each day to count toward his physical fitness.
Home Ec & Life Skills
We are going to make sure that Chandler knows how to cook, clean, iron, and do simple sewing repairs this year. We should have a good time solidifying these important lessons. They are important for his future independence.
This year we are going to start focusing on learning to play the Hymns. This is so he will be able to share this skill during his church mission if needed.
Chandler will be doing his very last year of Seminary this year. They will be studying Doctrine and Covenants and Church History. Once this year is completed, he will graduate from Seminary with a 4 year diploma. He loves his teacher and loves getting that spiritual boost each day.
Well that is it! This is the end of our journey and the last time I will be planning out our school year and sharing our choices. It’s so strange.
What are you planning this next year?
