Do you know why the colors of Christmas are red, green, and white? These colors are seen everywhere this time of year. The colors that we use to decorate can help us to remember Christ and his mission here on earth.
GREEN-This color represents eternal life. Like the evergreen tree that survives and keeps its color all through the winter, in John 3:16 we read that those who believe in Jesus, “shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” The color green tells us that God lives and that we can too, through the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ.
RED-This color reminds us of the blood that Jesus shed for us so that we can be with God again. We are promised by Christ that because of His atonement, we can repent of our sins. His atonement is what saves us. In Isaiah 1:18 we read; “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
WHITE-This color is the symbol of purity. Jesus Christ led a perfect and sinless life. It is through His sacrifice, that our lives can become pure once again.
Another color that is seen often at this time of year is the color yellow. This color reminds us of the Star of Bethlehem, which is the symbol of Christ’s birth. In Matthew 2:9-10 we read, “And, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy!”
