One of the tools I have been implementing in my own writing is the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking. This is a dictation software and once you get your Dragon trained, it is one of the best investments you can make for your writing.
I originally got my Dragon for health reasons. After typing on the computer for work for years, I have begun having trouble with tendinitis and the beginning stages of carpel tunnel. Both of those are very serious if you are a writer and need your hands to work and tell your stories. So I decided to learn to dictate my stories. I still type from time to time, but the more I use my Dragon, the more accurate it is becoming and also quicker.
I specifically chose the Premium version of Dragon so that I could dictate into a recorder and then have it transcribe my sessions at a later time. This has been a work in progress, but one I am determined to crack. I want the freedom to not be chained to my computer and still be able to write. This version of Dragon Naturally Speaking is allowing me that freedom.
I will admit that it has taken me some time to not only train my Dragon, but also myself. Learning to dictate my stories verbally has taken practice. But the more I do it, the more natural it is feeling. And my word counts are increasing by leaps and bounds. Eventually I plan on only dictating my stories and then I will only be in front of the computer to do editing.
This is a program I highly recommend. I’ll be sharing a couple of things that have helped me with it over the next couple of days. Once you crack this nut, the freedom is amazing, and the possibilities are endless.
