I choose to give this product 5 out of 5 Gold Teacher’s Stars!!
When my son attended public school, one of the subjects that was ignored was science. When I realized he wasn’t getting anything in this area, it really made me angry. In my opinion, science is a very important subject and if taught properly, will engage the student and open up a world of learning. We began homeschooling the following school year.
Our first year, we began with a general science course that covered many of the different aspects of science. My son learned a lot that year, but I thought that we needed more hands-on activities that were science related. So our next year, we concentrated on a more relaxed method and I encouraged him to explore scientific topics and he developed a deep love for his microscope. This was a good year, but I still felt we were missing something in our science program. Then Apologia entered our homeschool world and I have now found the science program we will use for the rest of our homeschooling years. My son will graduate high school using Apologia science.
We were sent Exploring Creation with General Science–2nd edition for review. I was immediately drawn to the beauty of this textbook, both inside and out. The book is extremely well made and colorful. However, as beautiful as the book appeared, I was even more impressed with the content. The text is written in a way that you feel as though you are having a conversation with the author. It is informative and filled with lots and lots of information, but it is far from boring. It is also written so that the student can guide themselves through the material and become independent in their learning, if you so choose.
One of the things I liked the most were the “On Your Own” sections. These sections are highlighted in yellow and ask detailed questions about the current topic the student is studying. This prevents the student from just “skimming” the text, as they need to actually read it in order to answer the questions. I also really appreciated the study guides that are located at the end of each module. These study guides are very detailed and help the student go back over all of the material in order to prepare them for their tests. The tests are also very thorough and cover each and every chapter. This enables the student to actually retain the information, rather than just learning it long enough to pass the test and then forget it.
The textbook is broken down into 16 modules. Each module is set up to be covered in about 2 weeks, if you work on science 30 to 45 minutes every day. We actually found that we enjoyed having science everyday and it made it fairly easy for my son to remember what he had covered previously. We also enjoyed the many experiments that were included in the modules that provided hands on learning opportunities to reinforce the learning concepts being taught. I especially liked that the materials needed for these experiments were inexpensive and easy to locate around the house.
Exploring Creation with General Science–2nd edition sells for $85.00 for the textbook and solutions and tests manual. However, you can purchase them individually with the textbook only being $65.00 and $20.00 for the solutions and tests manual only. In addition, Apologia offers the entire text on CD-Rom for $65.00 if you would prefer it in that format. Other additional items are a multimedia presentation CD to accompany the text for $15.00 and an MP3 recording of the text for auditory learners for $15.00. I purchased the multimedia presentation CD and I highly recommend it. It is well worth the money!
We are looking forward to completing Exploring Creation with General Science–2nd edition this next school year, which finds us in 7th grade. We know that by completing this jr. high level science program, we will be prepared for the more rigorous high school level programs.
