I choose to give this product 5 out of 5 Gold Teacher’s Stars!
When we were given the opportunity to review the All About Spelling program, I will admit that I thought, “Ok, sure…but we don’t really need it.” Boy did my opinion change and fast! I am now such an advocate of this spelling program and I will tell you why!
First, let me begin by saying that my son is a terrific speller. He has always been extremely advanced in that area and rarely miss-spells anything. Before I pulled him out of public school and began homeschooling, he had the good fortune of having a teacher who recognized his talent and nurtured it by giving him work above grade level. He had his own individualized spelling list and did for over two years. He kept her on her toes and we were very pleased with that aspect of his education at the time. When I brought him home to begin schooling, I adopted the same philosophy that had worked so well for his previous public school teacher when it came to spelling. I gave him an individualized list of words and we were both happy.
This year, I began pulling his spelling words from our studies. There were lots and lots of scientific words on his lists, and although I am a pretty good speller, I really had to look closely to make sure that he was spelling the words correctly. It was challenging for both of us and it was fun. So you can understand why I firmly believed that we didn’t really need a spelling program in our homeschool.
I decided that since my son was so advanced, that as a lark, we would just start at the beginning of the program and follow the lessons as indicated. We figured we would do 5 or 6 lessons each day just so that we could see how it worked for review purposes. I begged my son to be patient as I already knew he could spell every single word of level 1 correctly. (Actually, he can spell every single word of all of the levels correctly.) We spent quite a bit of time giggling together as we worked through the lessons.
As we worked through the lessons, I was surprised to discover that there were a couple of things that my son didn’t realize about the different sounds that the letters made. This allowed us to correct previous mistakes. A definite side affect of the program that we found extremely beneficial, was that by working through the sounds slowly, we were in essence doing speech therapy. My son has Asperger’s and has had speech problems for his entire life. He received speech therapy for all of his public school years, but they had concluded during his last year of public school. They had decided that there was not anything more they could do for him and that he knew all of the tools to speak clearly, but he just didn’t want to. Thanks to All About Spelling, he now slows down, enunciates and speaks more clearly than he has in a long time.
My son has convinced me to continue with using the program through each of the levels. He loves our “spelling time” and although he can actually spell each of the words before they are presented, he has been learning some of the rules that he hadn’t learned before. This ensures that his spelling foundation really is solid.
The All About Spelling program is phenomenol. I will continue using this program with my son and I highly recommend it to everyone else. The concept is the very best I have ever seen and it employs multisensory methods of learning. This works with your child and helps them to learn in the way that is best for them. With All About Spelling, you can’t help but spell success!
