From the Aleks site:
ALEKS is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.
ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.
Once we signed up, my son went through a tutorial in order to learn how to use the program. Then he took an assessment in which the Aleks program assessed where he was in his math studies. This enabled him to start where he needed to begin.
When we began homeschooling, my son was behind in math as the public schools had let him down. I know that I mentioned in another review that my son had not ever been taught his times tables before we began homeschooling at the end of 4th grade. We worked really hard to get him up to grade level the by the beginning of this school year as he entered 6th grade. It has been a long and difficult process to teach him the math concepts that he has needed in order to catch him up. I am not the most comfortable in teaching math as it is my weakest subject. To put it into perspective, I am probably a better artist, and I have told you already that I can’t even draw stick figures. But I am also determined, so I have worked really hard to ensure that my son doesn’t suffer from my lack of mathematic awareness and ability to explain it in a way that actually makes sense. So I am always on the lookout for a great math program that can take the pressure off of me, and help my son in the way that he deserves.
When we began Aleks, I was impressed with the way that it gauged how my son was doing. He liked how the problems were explained to him and how it helped him master the concepts being taught. When he missed a problem, it gave him the chance to have the problem explained and then work through another similar problem. As he has gone through the program it has reevaluated his progress and made adjustments as needed. This has ensured that he actually retains the information. He has also enjoyed trying to fill out his pie chart that divides the areas that are being taught. He is determined to make his pie complete.
Now, here is my exciting news…After only 1 month of using the Aleks program, my son took a standardized test to evaluate how he was doing. I purchased the service so we could prove to the local school district that he is making satisfactory progress. The tests were taken online and then evaluated by an independent educational testing service. The results are then ranked nationally against kids his age and grade level all across the United States. I just received those results in my e-mail today.
His reading and English tests were just as I expected and there were really not any surprises there as he has always been ahead in those areas. But you could have picked my jaw up off of the floor when I got to the math results. My son, who was just at a 6th grade level at the beginning of the school year tested at an 8th grade level! There were even a few areas that indicated that he is ready to learn some concepts at an 11th grade level! I attribute this not to just having a really bright son, but to the Aleks program. I know this has helped, because that is the only thing we have done differently this year for math. You can’t argue with results like these!
