Yesterday I got a slight shock. I found out through a text message from a friend that my son had asked a girl to the Prom. Prom is this Friday night.
Chandler is going to Prom. Now this might not seem like a big deal to some of you. But for those of you who don’t know about Chandler, he is in the autism spectrum and has Asperger’s Syndrome. The fact that he actually asked a girl out on a date is a big deal. The fact that this is his very first date ever is also a big deal. The fact that his first date is to Prom when he homeschools is also a big deal. The girl that he is taking to Prom? She is also in the autism spectrum, so another big deal. And she said yes. Yep…big deal.
Apparently, he wrote her a note to ask her and a female friend of his helped him to make it really cute. Then he had it delivered while she was in school by my friend who works in the high school. That’s how I found out through a text. I admit I freaked out a bit. He had no idea there was so much to pull together on such short notice. He has had a crash course in dating and special formal event dating. We have him a suit as we couldn’t get an actual tuxedo on such short notice in our area. But it is a nice suit. And we have a wrist corsage ordered and paid for at the local florist. We also managed to make plans for a special dinner and whatnot for the two young prom goers. He is still finalizing plans with her for the big day tomorrow. She hasn’t been answering her phone or text messages. I imagine she is with her mother trying to get the perfect last minute dress. We’ll get it figured all out soon enough though.
She had another friend help her put her acceptance together. She put swedish fish in blue cellophane and tied it up with ribbon and this note:
She gave it to him at church last night. He was exhilarated and said he felt accomplished.
I only have a picture of her note as I didn’t know about this in advance. I have it on good authority from my friend Suzie that it was cute though.
So C is for Celebrate (since my son actually asked a girl out on a date and she said yes), Cute (since the whole thing really is even if it was short on notice), and Chandler (since without him, this story wouldn’t even be possible.) Watch for further updates tomorrow and on Saturday.
