Last year, on this date, I was thankful for the men and women who have served us.
I honored my father, last year. He is one of the many brave veterans who have fought for our freedoms. I really can’t say it any better than I did last year. So here is a recap from last year’s post:
I would be remiss if I did not mention my very favorite veteran today. I grew up as a Navy Brat, and I am ever so proud of my father and all he has done to protect our freedoms.
My Dad doesn’t talk a lot about his experiences during war. I know it must be horrific and difficult to talk about those things that he experienced just so we could be free. He served in Vietnam and there are just things he will not tell us. But I want him to know I appreciate the sacrifices he made for us.
My Dad entered the military through the Army. But he later joined the Navy, and that is how I remember him the best. He retired after spending 20 years in the military. These are a couple of pictures of him in one of his re-enlistment ceremonies.
I remember seeing him leave on his ships and waiting anxiously with my Mom for him to return home to us. I was just a little girl and I remember making a cassette tape for him one year for Christmas. We still have that tape today.
I remember waiting for his ship to arrive. I remember being able to tour his ship and see where he stayed while he was away from us.
My siblings don’t have all those memories. My Dad was retired from the military before they were either born or were old enough to have memories. But I know they are just as proud of our Dad as I am.
My Father instilled a Patriotic Pride into each of us. We each have a deep respect for our veterans and for our country. He still never fails to show his own respect for those who have died for all of us even today. He participates each year with the American Legion and VFW group in the Memorial Day ceremonies that are held here. That is my Dad bringing up the rear of the group. And my Dad next to the blue flag. Isn’t he handsome?
My Dad was a hero. My Dad is a hero. My Dad is my hero for always. Thank you Dad!
What are you thankful for today?
